Information Regarding VOIP Phone Systems as Replacement to Traditional PBX and CLEC systems

Notes taken by Shawn Hatcher at VOIP discussion in Nashville

I.                    Reasons to consider VOIP phone systems.

A.                 Single point of connection for computers and phone systems.

B.                 Economies of scale gained from combination of voice and data over the same connections.

C.                 Makes switching phone locations easier because the phone system now sends a signal for a phone to it’s hardware address rather than the traditional means of transmitting over a particular physical line.

D.                 Cost of VOIP less than upgrading or moving PBX system.

1.      Consolidates responsibility to a single vendor or service provider.

2.      Expense of voice and data together is more than if they’re integrated.

3.      Ease of changing location.  You can even setup VOIP to work over site-to-site VPNs.

4.      Telephone hardware providers such as Lucent and Nortel are moving away from traditional PBX systems.

5.      More options including voice-mail to email, customized ring tones, and greetings.

6.      The average payback for VOIP systems is about 14 months, where as the traditional phone system continues to cost the customer more for a greater period than 14 months.  This includes savings on administration.

7.      Moving an existing PBX never pays.

E.                  Benefits of deployment on LAN.

1.      Don’t have to run phone and network infrastructure.  Instead each employee location needs a CAT5 connection.

2.      PCs are hooked into phones, which have an in and out port to provide a hub of sorts in order to share the CAT5 connection.

II.                 Reliability, Quality and Security of VOIP systems.

A.                 Security is a managed environment.  Therefore you need to continue taking the security measures that you already have in place including firewalls, virus protection and updates.

B.                 Many CLEC VOIP providers, that also provide VOIP solutions for businesses, locate their voice systems on separate VLANs so that the only traffic traveling across the VLAN is voice traffic.  This also increases the dependability and performance of VOIP systems.

C.                 VOIP systems cannot be tapped into at the PBX or CPE area like traditional phone systems.  This is especially true for VOIP systems that CLECs provide.  For  CLECs you must tap in at the CLECs office.

D.                 Saves carriers money by using more data bandwidth and less voice.

E.                  TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) and IP have similar quality.  IP is going to offer broader voice spectrum than TDM used in traditional PBX systems.

F.                  E911—the standard for providing 911 service to VOIP customers.  Standard is currently being worked out.  Problems arise due to the flexibility VOIP offers.

G.                 Need a VLAN and/or QOS(Quality Of Service) capable switch.  QOS is a standard that gives preference to VOIP packets when routers and switches forward IP packets.
